A select 30 fat bike riders can participate in a guided fat bike tour in Grand Teton National Park as part of the Global Fat Bike Summit and Festival held at the Snow King Resort in Jackson, WY January 23 – 25.

Done in conjunction with Jackson-based Teton Mountain Bike Tours, this is the only opportunity to ride a fat bike in Grand Teton National Park. Currently, fat bikes are banned from national parks like GTNP and Yellowstone.

“This is one of the reasons for this Summit,” said Scott Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald’s Bicycles. “We’re trying to show public land managers that fat bikes should be an allowable use in National Parks. These tours will show how safely fat bikes can coexist with other winter recreation in our National Parks.”

Wyoming State Parks Sponsors Global Fat Bike Summit

Wyoming State Parks has announced that it will sponsor the 4th Annual Global Fat Bike Summit and Festival at Snow King Resort in Jackson, WY, January 23-25, 2015. Their involvement marks a shift toward land managers’ increasing awareness of the recreational and economic potential of fat bikes. Additionally, Wyoming State Parks has announced it will groom singletrack fat bike trails in Curt Gowdy State Park this winter, from December 15 through March 15. Says QBP’s Advocacy Director Gary Sjoquist, “When public land managers step up to learn what fat bike riders want for trails, it’s a win/win for both.”

2015 Summit Dates & Info

4th Annual Global Fat Bike Summit and Festival Takes Place Jan. 23 – 25 at Snow King Resort, Jackson, WY

QBP, along with Fitzgerald’s Bicycles, Hoback Sports, Wyoming Pathways, and Mountain Bike the Tetons/IMBA, are excited to announce the 4th annual Global Fat Bike Summit and Festival will be at the Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming January 23-25, 2015.

This unique event combines a fat bike summit training conference for land managers and advocates, along with a fun fat bike festival over the weekend that features fat bike demos, clinics, latest product displays, and fat bike races.

The Friday summit will focus on training sessions and panel discussions featuring the latest in the evolving world of best management practices for fat bike use on public lands. Management practices will be discussed with a focus on winter use since the majority of access issues fall in the winter months. This interactive training day will include land managers from the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, and state and local governments, along with bike advocates and industry representatives.

The festival portion of the event begins Friday night with a fat bike night ride and evening banquet, and continues through Saturday and Sunday with a variety of demo rides, product clinics, and riding events that include an optional guided fat bike tour of Grand Teton National Park.

“Our goal with the Summit/Festival is twofold,” said QBP’s Advocacy Director Gary Sjoquist. “First, we seek to spread best practices in terms of where fat bikes are ridden, how technology continues to shape fat bikes, the latest snow grooming techniques for fat bike singletrack, and just plain have fun with these big tire bikes. Second, we continue to seek winter access for fat bikes to national parks where they are largely prohibited, and to help all land managers with the latest tools that will help them offer more fat bike access to the public.”

While QBP’s brands Salsa, Surly, Whisky Parts, and 45Nrth will be title sponsors, the event will seek additional brand sponsors to allow attendees to try different products and talk with product reps. Trek will have fat bikes on hand, and Specialized, 907, Borealis and other manufacturers are being solicited to attend. Parts and apparel companies are invited to attend and display product as well.

“For the 4th year in a row, The Fat Bike Summit will bring together bicycle industry experts, key land managers and advocates to talk about the importance of fat bikes to local communities and public lands,” said Scott Fitzgerald, owner of Fitzgerald’s Bicycles. “Now that fat bikes have grown from what many people thought was a fad to a significant summer and winter user group, it is more important than ever to communicate current land management best practices as they relate to fat bike use.”

“Our approach here is a ‘big tent’ for all,” said Sjoquist. “Fat bikes are not a fad – nearly every manufacturer at the recent Interbike trade show featured fat bikes. Growth will continue and access issues will develop, particularly in the Nordic and snow machine trail networks, so we want to address this head-on and help land managers proactively adapt to this new use. We’d like to offer the opportunity for all manufacturers to participate in our Summit and Festival,” he said.

The Fat Bike Summit and Festival registration will also include discounted lodging options at Snow King Resort in Jackson and special skiing discounts at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

“This is an exceptional venue for land managers to gather the latest information on Fat Bikes and to meet with advocates and fat bike users,” said Tim Young, Executive Director of Wyoming Pathways.

Updates regarding the 4th Annual Global Fat Bike Summit and Festival agenda and riding events will be found at http://www.fatbikesummit.com. Manufacturers or companies wishing for more information about the Summit and Festival should contact Gary Sjoquist (gsjoquis@qbp.com).

2014 Fat Bike Summit Expands Pursuit of Access and Economic Development

The 3rd Annual Global Fat Bike Summit will take place over 2 days in Ogden, UT. The event brings together dealers, consumers, land managers, fat bike manufacturers and media representatives to promote fat bikes’ low environmental impact, seek access to lands currently off limits to bikes, and explores the potential for local economic growth opportunity such access can bring.

The two-day event, co-sponsored by Quality Bicycle Products and Ogden City, combines educational seminars, a fat bike expo, a festival, and a race. The first day will consist of educational seminars focused on fat bikes’ uniquely low environmental impact and the revenue potential generated by allowing fat bikes access to public lands. Day two presents the festival and expo, with hands-on opportunities for guests to learn more about the bikes by riding them and talking with representatives from various fat bike brands. Races for both advanced and beginner fat bike riders will be included.

Previously hosted in Island Park, ID, the Fat Bike Summit moves this year to Ogden, UT, an outdoor recreation mecca and home of QBP’s west coast distribution center. In recent years, the city of Ogden has been building a reputation as an accessible, versatile center for cyclists, climbers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. The city has concentrated on public land access, trail building, and building in-town bicycle-friendly infrastructure. These investments are reaping rewards, and organizers of the Summit are leveraging this success as evidence of the economic viability of allowing greater land access.

The 2014 Fat Bikes Summit takes place January 24th and 25th, 2014. The expo, demo rides, and races will be held in the foothills above the city on the grounds of the Mount Ogden Golf Course and will be hosted by the GOAL Foundation and Ogden City. The GOAL Foundation is a local non-profit that encourages people to “Get Out And Live”® through participation and volunteerism at local events.

Post-Summit report by bloggers Scott Fitzgerald and Dave Chenault

Event co-host Scott ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald has a post (with 8 photos) on his Fitzgerald’s Bicycles blog titled Fat Bike Summit 2013 – It’s a wrap!

Scott FitzgeraldWow.  Over the years, I’ve been involved with countless events at every level from sponsor to organizer but this year’s Fat Bike Summit and Festival was the most comprehensive event we have been at the head of.  After months of conference calls, spreadsheets, emails, and brainstorm sessions, I finally found myself in the van driving up to Island Park Thursday night.  At that point, my hope was that everything was simply on cruise control. (continued)

And blogger Dave Chenault has a post (with 6 photos) about the Summit on his Bedrock & Paradox blog:

Bedrock and ParadoxI was on the fence about hauling down to the summit until Casey made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: a free ride and good companionship.  I left town after work on Wednesday and did what has become all too rare lately, made a relaxed multi-hour drive away…

The whole weekend was very well organized, but the rapid-fire presentations Friday morning were the best.  I’ll just say that in the world of mental health conference presentees don’t stick to their time slots very well, so this was a pleasant contrast.

Fatbike access, at least over snow, is a curious creature.  Once the snow piles up fatbike are truncated to well-packed surfaces, which under all but extraordinary conditions means snowmachine trails or trails groomed for skate skiing.  Fat bikes are thus beholden to potentially hostile user groups, until more places gain a critical mass of bikers and start bike-specific grooming programs.    There seems to be three primary concerns here, each given over to a certain user group.  Land and ski area managers worry about safety, snowmachiners worry about cost sharing (their registration often pays for the grooming), and skiers worry about fatbikes rutting up their trails. The summit organizers had compelling answers to all of these. (continued)

WyoFile article: Fat bike festival aims to increase winter access

peakstoplains_snowbikes_banner

Kelsey Dayton at WyoFile (“an independent, nonprofit news service focused on the people, places and policy of Wyoming”) authored a post on their Peaks to Plains blog this week titled Fat bike festival aims to increase winter access.

“Wouldn’t it be cool,” Scott Fitzgerald says, “if you could throw your fat bike onto a snow coach and go to Old Faithful. Spend the night and during the day bike around the geysers?”

This dream trip is just that for now — a dream. Fat bikes, bikes with large tires designed for snow and sand, aren’t allowed in Yellowstone National Park in the winter. Something Fitzgerald, who owns Fitzgerald’s Bicycles in Victor, Idaho wants to change.

Endurance cyclist Jay Petervary to race at 2013 Fat Bike Summit

QBP sent out this media release (PDF) earlier this week about Jay Petervary, the endurance cyclist from Fitzgerald’s Bicycles (Summit co-host) who broke the Tour Divide individual time-trial record last year.

Jay is sponsored by Salsa Cycles, one of the Summit’s two Presenting Sponsors.

I asked Jay for a couple of photos to go along with this blog post and he sent me these two of him with his wife, Tracey Petervary.  His descriptions of the photos:

Both of these pics are from our trip to Nome in 2011 and both of these places are seriously in the middle of nowhere!

Left: In the ghost town of Iditarod where the trail literally ended and we waited several days for the trail breakers to come thru.

Right: In the ghost town of Ophir, where we met some Iditarod check-point folks celebrating “Mexican Night” with enchiladas and margaritas.

Summit and Festival attendees will see a great deal of Jay and Tracey this weekend, including their Friday night slideshow.

Summit article in Jackson Hole News & Guide

Jackson Hole News and Guide

This week’s edition of the Jackson Hole News & Guide has an article about the Summit by Miller N. Resor titled Riders, makers to push fat bikes at weekend confab:

Regional snow bikers hope to define etiquette and promote the sport during summit in Idaho.

Jay Petervary has ridden the snow-covered Iditarod trail in Alaska on a fat bike, but he is still amazed by the opportunities in his own backyard.

“There are probably 1.000 miles of rideable trails between Driggs and Island Park.” he said. With everything from snow-packed county roads to snowmobile tracks to trails on Snow King and now the Nordic facilities at Grand Tar ghee Resort, there are endless fat biking options in the Tetons.

Fat bikes are mountain bikes with wide forks that can accommodate fat, 4-inch-wide tires. Al though traveling over snow is an ideal use for fat bikes, they are also touted as excellent for navigating sandy beaches, loose gravel or even mountain bike trails.

Starting Friday, the second annual Fat Bike Winter Summit and Festival will call together fat-bike enthusiasts, industry representatives and land managers for a three-day gathering aimed at celebrating and promoting the sport.

The summit will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Sawtelle Mountain Resort in Island Park, Idaho. “They are super-fun bikes in general,” Peter- vary said. “They put a smile on your face. Old people love them, and while cross-country skiing is hard to learn, everybody rides a bike.”

On Friday, demos showcasing the newest de signs in the industry will be available at two sem inars aimed at new fat bike riders setting out on public and private trails.

Petervary, who has helped Fitzgerald’s Bicycles and Quality Bicycle Products put on the summit, said that as fat hiking starts to catch on, it is im portant for the growth of the sport to define rules of etiquette and to work with public and private landowners.

“We want to show responsible use,” Petervary said. “and we want to work together.”

On Saturday, 60-kilometer and 25-k bike rac es will take place on the trails around Sawtelle Mountain Resort. The races will be followed by a fat-bike expo. ¡n the afternoon there will be a fat- bike clinic followed by an awards ceremony and party.

Sunday will be dedicated to more demos and more riding. Tracy Petervary, Jay Petervary’s wife, will lead a women-only group ride while her husband leads a mixed group.

The summit will also include two dinners, two breakfasts, beer and a bunch of free gear, all for the $99 registration fee. Members of the Inter national Mountain Bicycling Association will re ceive a $10 discount.

There are still bunkhouse accommodations available at the Sawtelle Mountain Resort. For information about the summit and a full schedule visit FatBikeSummit.com.
